Monterey County's climate is semi-arid or Mediterranean, with only about 14 to 17 inches of rainfall each year. Outdoor watering comprises about 50 percent of a typical home's water usage. Landscaping with drought-tolerant and native plants reduces irrigation water demands. Many are quite hearty and beautiful. They also require less pesticide use, which is good for your kids, pets, and neighborhood creeks.
